About OwnVoice

Your work, in your own voice.

OwnVoice helps students and PhD candidates find passages that might read as AI-written, so they can fix them before they submit. It shows you where and why, then helps you put it back in your own words.

Why we built OwnVoice

AI detectors are now part of how universities check work. They are not perfect. Honest students get flagged for writing that is too polished, too formulaic, or shaped by a grammar tool they used along the way.

That leaves students guessing. Which paragraphs might be a problem? Why? And how do you fix them without ending up in the same place?

We built OwnVoice to answer those questions before submission, not after. It is a tool for checking your own work, not for getting around the rules.

What OwnVoice does

  1. Finds passages to look at.

Upload a .docx, PDF or text file. OwnVoice reads it section by section and marks the paragraphs that may read as AI-written. Each one comes with a plain reason.

  2. Compares it with your own writing.

Add a few samples of things you have written yourself, and OwnVoice learns how you usually write. It can then point out where a draft sounds less like you.

  3. Helps you fix it, your way.

For each flagged passage, you can always rewrite it yourself, with guiding questions to help. Where your university allows declared AI use, you can also ask for an AI-assisted suggestion in a tone you choose. Any AI suggestion you use is labelled AI-assisted for good.

  4. Fixes spelling and grammar, minimally.

Corrections change only the mistake. Anything bigger is shown as a note for you to decide on.

  5. Keeps a clear record.

Every upload is saved as a version, so you can compare drafts and see what changed. You can export an authorship record as a PDF that shows which changes were yours and which were AI-assisted.

What we believe

  • A flag is not a verdict.

No detector is certain, ours included. We show likelihood bands such as “likely”, “possible” and “unlike you”, each with its reasons. We never give a single precise percentage, and we will never tell you your work is “safe from Turnitin”.

  • You can always write it yourself.

Every AI option sits next to a “write it myself” path. The aim is your voice, not ours.

  • Honest about AI.

If OwnVoice adds, removes or rewrites a line for you, it is labelled AI-assisted in your record and your PDF. You can’t hide or remove that label, and that is deliberate.

  • Your university’s rules come first.

You tell us your university’s policy on AI use. If it doesn’t allow declared AI help, OwnVoice won’t offer AI rewrites. It points out problems and asks guiding questions instead.

  • Rewrites are checked for meaning.

Before an AI suggestion is shown, it is checked for changes to what you meant, such as a claim made stronger or broader, reversed, or new content added. If one is found, the suggestion isn’t shown. Checks can miss things, so read each suggestion before you use it.

Our privacy promise

Your thesis is your work, and it stays that way.

Read the full details in our privacy notice.

  • We never train AI on your writing. The AI providers we use are told not to train on the text we send them, and where a provider offers it, we make sure it doesn’t keep that text.

  • Hosted in the EU, with your writing encrypted. Our servers are in the EU, and the text of your drafts, versions and writing samples is encrypted before we store it. Some features send text to AI providers we have chosen carefully. Our Privacy notice lists who they are and where.

  • Delete whenever you like. Remove individual writing samples, or delete your account and everything in it, at any time.

  • Nothing goes to your university unless you choose to share it.

  • Your own words only. When you add samples to your writing profile from a pasted email or message thread, OwnVoice keeps only the messages you wrote.
